Hygieia is best known as the surviving color detail from Klimt’s faculty painting Medicine, created around 1900 for the University of Vienna commission. The work sparked major criticism when shown publicly in 1901, and the faculty paintings were later destroyed in 1945, leaving only photographs, sketches, and this recognizable detail.
This dress reflects the artwork through its strong front-facing presence, red-and-gold ornament feel, and sharp contrast between figure and ground. The bowl and the Aesculapian snake motif read as the visual center, giving the print a controlled, emblem-like structure on the garment.
Gustav Klimt was a founder of the Vienna Secession and a leading figure of Art Nouveau in Austria. His work is recognized for symbolic themes, decorative patterning, and a bold approach to allegory and modern life.
