About Jurisprudence by Gustav Klimt

Jurisprudence was one of Gustav Klimt’s Faculty Paintings for the University of Vienna. It was first shown in 1903 together with Medicine and Philosophy. The work showed Truth, Justice, and Law above a condemned man held by furies and a kraken, creating a dark symbolic view of justice and punishment.

The original painting was later destroyed by fire at Immendorf Castle in 1945. Because the work is lost, this skirt should be understood as wearable art inspired by the surviving historical image record of Klimt’s Jurisprudence, not as a modern official museum reproduction.
