Sea Change (1947) was made at a transition in Pollock’s process. The Seattle Art Museum notes that he began the painting in 1946 with a brush and vivid blues and pinks, then reworked it in 1947 on the studio floor using dripping as the dominant method.
That second phase added rough and reflective elements, including scattered gravel, dripped aluminum, and glossy black house paint.
