About the artwork

Prisoners Exercising (also known as Prisoners’ Round (after Gustave Doré)) was painted in February 1890 during Van Gogh’s Saint-Rémy period. The composition is based on Doré’s 1872 illustration of Newgate Prison’s exercise yard.
